How to and What's Available


Research File Room
National Register and County Survey files are available for researchers by appointment only. You can make an appointment by calling 404-651-5911. Generally available: Monday (closed am) 1pm-4pm Tuesday-Friday: 9am-4pm. Research times may vary depending on HPD staff availability. Please call ahead to be sure you can access the files.


Information
Copies are 10-cents per page for self-service. Copies are 25-cents per page to have staff copy.  Payment is by cash or check. Checks can be made out to: Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Money is collected by Lynn Speno in room 419E. Receipts are given upon request.
Lockers are available for storing personal items. (You must bring your own padlock.)
If you are unsure where to re-file something, ask for assistance.

Archaeological Files (by county)
We have copies of technical reports generated under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. To use these file contact Bob Entorf at 404-651-6775. The Georgia Archaeological Site File in Athens maintains the current database of all identified sites in the state, as well as some manuscripts and reports on academic research that we do not have. For complete information on archaeological resources, it is necessary to go both places. Architects and Builders in Georgia (alphabetical)
The information covers biographical data on architects and builders who worked in Georgia from the 1800s to c.1950 for the most part. For later architects, please contact the Georgia Branch of the American Institute of Architects in Atlanta (phone#: 404-222-0099). Architectural Plans- we have scattered throughout the files a number of architectural plans for houses from different eras.

Historic Bridge Survey
A cooperative project by Georgia DOT of historic bridges.  Survey information is available at GA DOT.

Centennial Farms (by county, farm name, and year of award)
Research submitted by owners, some include histories of farm, farming, and historic photos.

HABS/HAER
Reduced plans and black and white photos of HABS survey in Georgia from 1935 or so.  We do NOT own copyright on these and cannot offer prints for use, as the Library of Congress owns originals. These can also be accessed on the Internet at http://www.cr.nps.gov/habshaer/. We have subsequent materials in this series from 1970s on.

Survey projects are keyed to topographic maps; photos or slides included. Also State-Owned Buildings Survey (by state agency).

Identified Sites (by county)
Variety of materials on historic places in Georgia. Some are material submitted for listing in National Register. Names may vary if project never finalized. 

National Register Listed Properties (by county and official name of nomination)
Complete National Register nomination (text, maps, slides, photocopies of photographs). First researched sites for Georgia date to 1969.  Official photos taken at time of listing, and not necessarily ever updated. Special file areas exist for Ossabaw and Sapelo Islands, Georgia.

Topical (by subject)
More than 100 topics such as architectural styles, religious camp meetings, cemeteries (not specific graveyards but how to restore, problems, advise, examples), railroad depots, synagogues and Womens History Project.
